Dallaglio attacks NHS over cancer betrayal
LAWRENCE DALLAGLIO has branded NHS bosses a “national disgrace” for reneging on a deal to fund lifesaving cancer treatments.
He had been called in by the Government to devise a scheme to improve cancer care access, and ended up by giving the NHS egg on its face, saying the health service had “turned back the clock” by refusing to pay for cutting-edge radiotherapy treatment which kills tumours without the need for lengthy hospital stays.
Calling LaLite (Health Minister Jeremy Hunt) to intervene in the decision by NHS bosses to ditch a plan that Hunt asked him to draw up to help an extra 2,000 patients get treatment.
Nothing changesTen years ago, the current Government was promising the earth to cancer patients, only to leave them in the lurch facing the reality that the promises were founded on hot air. So Laurence got up and sent a letter to LaLite , saying only a “pitiful number of patients” would be treated.
Doctors say radiotherapy machines are sitting unused in hospitals while patients die because the quango is refusing to fund treatments for many different cancers.
We’ve all seen the rooms – often locked up – in which we caught a glimpse of brand new equipment. Only to find that there was no funding to train technicians to use it, no-one was qualfied, etc. etc.
Good for Laurence, but WHEN are the Government going to STOP making empty promises and GET DOWN TO SOLID WORK? That’s the trouble when Politicians interfere – they are so busy filling out expenses claims they don’t have time to actually do what we need of them.
Make a note of this – and ask questions of prospective MPs in the run-up to the election. Or risk having the new equipment being thrown out as obsolete.
